Back in 2000, a 76-acre parcel of land in Booborowie, South Australia, came up for sale. Michael and Jam Jolley saw it as a chance to pursue their dream of having a sustainable, organic carob orchard. So they bought the land and planted a selected variety of sweet carob trees – 6,000 total – that are now thriving with no pesticides or insecticides.
The carob pods are harvested in March and April and are taken directly to the manufacturing facility on site.
“As we do all the growing, harvesting, kibbling, roasting, milling and packing right here on our property, we can ensure that you get a non-contaminated product that’s nut-free, gluten-free and GMO free,” Michael said. “It’s absolutely the cleanest, most flavorful carob you’ll find anywhere.”
Carob is commonly used as a substitute for chocolate. It’s naturally sweet, so unlike cocoa it doesn’t need any additional sugar. It’s also free of caffeine and methyxanthines.
Carob has been used to treat stomach problems ever since the biblical days of John the Baptist. The tannins in carob help prevent harmful bacteria growth in the intestine, and the natural sugars in carob can help treat diarrhea. It’s a good source of fiber, vitamin E, Thiamin, potassium and it’s full of antioxidants.
